This song, Joan of Arc, was written by Tasmanian songwriter, author and consultant Jason Bresnehan and forms part of his Saints and Sinners series, a collection of twenty-seven original songs inspired by twenty-seven saints whose lives demonstrate overcoming and movement. The series is being developed into a companion book that combines song lyrics with concise saint biographies focused on each saint’s story, saintly movement and the obstacle they overcame.

Joan of Arc was born in Domrémy, France, around 1412 and died in Rouen in 1431. Her saintly movement took place across France during the Hundred Years’ War, where she carried conviction into military and political danger. Her resting place is traditionally honoured in Rouen. Joan began in obscurity, a village girl who believed God had spoken to her and acted on that belief.
She overcame disbelief, fear and the full weight of power. Joan stepped into a war she had no rank to enter and moved with a certainty that unsettled armies and leaders. Captured and interrogated, she refused to deny what she had heard. Her movement is courage under pressure, a teenager who kept moving when every force around her tried to stop her. Joan’s movement through life shows what happens when conviction outruns fear and a single voice changes the direction of a nation.
