Limbo Tide
A hush of tide beneath the stars, where echoes of history float and wait
Wooden boats on a quiet gulf, no news from north or west
Just a village living tide to tide, before Vietnam had a name
Then steel-grey ships rose on the horizon, tall men in colours they’d never seen
Speaking a tongue that carried thunder, and none of it made sense to the sea
He’d watched a friend go up in smoke, a trip wire in the trees
Walked out as half a ghost with jungle grime still in his hair
Seven days on borrowed time, a village waiting by the tide
Where the fear ran out of his body slow, and the moral lines turned to air
Pattaya sits in the middle, where the daylight prays and the night forgets
Where old men walk slow and women fast, and nobody calls it wrong
Where the gulf once fed the village clean, and now it carries plastic like a second tide
Everyone’s just trying to stay alive in a place that never chooses a side
Now the skyline’s twenty stories high, the boats replaced by neon bars
The broken come from everywhere — not jungles now but failed memoirs
Men running from a marriage’s end, or a career that bled them dry
Finding the same old borrowed comfort in the last years of their lives
Thai women of sixty-three easing elderly husbands off songthaews with steady hands
Young women making merit at dawn, gifting Buddha with money that kept them alive last night
An expat raising children that aren’t his, and their cousins too, sending them to Catholic school on the hill
A boy of thirteen with tiger eyes swinging a golf club clean — on his way to a life no one in the village ever dreamed
In this limbo tide, we carry the weight, eyes on the horizon, hearts set to wait
STORY BOARD
SONG OVERVIEW
Written and produced by Tasmanian Songwriter Jason Bresnehan, Limbo Tide is a Vietnam Folk Noir song set against the history and modern reality of Pattaya, Thailand. Part historical reflection, part social observation, and part human documentary, the song explores a place that has spent decades sitting between worlds.
The lyrics move from Pattaya's origins as a quiet fishing village through the changes brought by the Vietnam War and into the modern city that exists today. Along the way, the song introduces soldiers, expatriates, families, workers and ordinary people attempting to build lives amid constant change.
At its heart, Limbo Tide is a song about people rather than places. It recognises that beneath every stereotype and every headline are human beings carrying their own hopes, burdens and dreams.
MUSICAL DIRECTION
Limbo Tide follows a folk-noir storytelling approach inspired by songwriters such as Kris Kristofferson.
The arrangement is intentionally restrained, built around acoustic guitar, sparse instrumentation and a single exposed vocal. The production allows the story to remain central and creates the feeling of a documentary being sung rather than narrated.
The result is reflective, observational and grounded in the details of ordinary lives.
THE ARTWORK
The artwork reflects the song's documentary style and sense of observation.
Rather than focusing on tourism, nightlife or landmarks, the visual tone reinforces the human stories contained within the lyrics. The focus remains on people, movement and the passing of time.
Like the song itself, the artwork avoids judgement and instead invites the viewer to look more closely.
PERSONAL CONNECTION TO JASON BRESNEHAN SONGWRITER AND PRODUCER
Limbo Tide was written after spending significant time in Pattaya and observing a gap between how the city is often portrayed and what I was actually seeing on the ground.
Most discussions about Pattaya tend to focus on nightlife, tourism or stereotypes. What interested me were the people. Thai families, expatriates, veterans, workers, children, business owners and retirees all trying to build lives within a place that has changed dramatically across the decades.
The catalyst for bringing this song forward tonight was seeing news coverage of a United States aircraft carrier arriving in Pattaya. It was another reminder of how history has a habit of repeating itself. More than fifty years after the Vietnam War helped transform Pattaya, American sailors are once again arriving in the same harbour and the same city continues adapting to forces much larger than itself.
The title Limbo Tide reflects the feeling that Pattaya exists between worlds. Between village and city, past and present, East and West, prosperity and hardship. Yet despite all the change, one thing remains constant: most people are simply trying to build better lives for themselves and those they love.
The song's message is simple. Look beyond the stereotype. Every place has a human story if you're prepared to see it.
